DUTY - HONOR - COUNTRY

When Is The Right Time

To Honor Our Military Heroes?

By Ashley Wilson  6th grade

When I think of our men and women in the military, I automatically think "hero."  If you look up "hero" in the dictionary you will find it means: a person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life.  Our military has sacrificed much, just by enlisting in one of our military services.  They often have to leave family and friends behind, to go where they are needed, sometimes in remote areas of our world.  To sacrifice doesn't have to mean dying, but can be giving up the comforts of home or hugging your family goodbye.

To "honor" someone means to respect greatly, regard highly or esteem.  I think the right time to honor our military heroes, is everyday.  When you think about it, they do so much for all of us.  I know many people don't realize how very much they do.  We see the big things on the news or read about it in the paper.  If it were not for the brave people that have served in our nation's military, down through the years, we would not be living free today!

My family has been personally touched, down through the years, by relatives that have served in the military.  That gives me a special reason to be proud and honor those that serve now, in my lifetime.  My grandfather and his 2 brothers served in WWII, one lost his life on the battlefield.  I had 4 uncles that served in the Army and one lost his life, while on duty.  My brother, Allen, is now serving in Afghanistan and I am very proud of him.

I feel "everyday" is the right time to honor our military!  We can do it by praying for them and their families.  We can honor them by showing respect for our flag and country, both of which they are fighting for, often with their very lives.  Sending cards and gifts of thanks to our soldiers and their families, lets them know we care for them.  Our country has special days set aside to honor the military men and women, but for me that honor is everyday!

*AMERICA'S MILITARY HEROES*

All of our military personnel are our HEROES!!! Everyone in this great nation knows of a military hero personally!! Whether they are your brother or sister, your mother or father, your cousin, Aunt or Uncle, your neighbor, your spouse, high school friend, or a close family friend when our nation calls on them to defend our freedoms, to protect us, or to help another nation in harm's way they are there!! They are depended on, needed, and get the job done!! They are AMERICA'S MILITARY HEROES!!!
